Oba Adedeji Onafowokan was born on June 13, 1936 at Ilagunjo, Ijebu Imusin, into the family of Pa Samson Alaba Onafowokan and Madam Bernice Olorunfunke Okubajo. He first attended Ajebo United Primary School Ikala, Ijebu Imusin, and then St. Patrick’s Primary School, Ikija, Ijebu Imusin, between 1944 and 1953. He studied at St. John’s Teacher College, Abeokuta, and later moved to St. Leo’s Teacher College for his Grade II Teacher Certificate. After he sat for and passed GCE O/L and A/L, he proceeded to the University of Ife for higher studies in 1967 and graduated with a B.A degree in 1970.

During his days as a teacher, he taught in various schools like St. Richard’s School, Gbongan; St. Martins’ School, Orile Odo, Ibadan; Christ the King School, Moor Plantation, Ibadan. In 1972, he was commissioned into the Nigerian Army Education Corps as a Full Lieutenant. He rose to the rank of Major before he voluntarily retired on December 31, 1987.

Oba Onafowokan is a member of the Ijebu Imusin Club. He was crowned Oba on September 27, 1991, and initiated the building of a palace in Ijebu Imusin. His reign has brought much progress, peace, and tranquility to the Ijebu Imusin community. He is a descendant of the Ojafadego Ruling House of the Oloko Dynasty. Hence, he is addressed as Alayeluwa Oba S. A. Onafowokan, Ojafadego II, Oloko of Ijebu Imusin.
