Professor Amusat Titilayo Hassan was born on Monday, 2 February 1948, at Ijebu Imusin, Ogun State, Nigeria. Young Amusat was taken to Ilesha when he was barely two years old. He attended CAC Primary School between 1954 and 1959, and CAC Grammar School, Efon-Alaye, as a pioneer student between 1960 and 1965, attaining the best result in his set. He proceeded to Muslim College, Ijebu-Ode, for his A-Level between 1966 and 1967. He was later awarded a State scholarship to study for his A-Level and came out with an outstanding GCE London result.
When he was leaving Muslim College, his testimonial said of him, ‘He will be a University don.’ Again, he got a State scholarship to the University of Ibadan to read B.Sc. Zoology between 1968 and 1971, graduating with the best result. At age 26, still as a State scholar, he obtained his PhD in 1974 from the University of Ibadan, Oyo State.
He taught for one year at The Polytechnic Ibadan before joining the Department of Zoology, University of Ibadan, as Lecturer II in July 1975. He is a seasoned professor, and has served the University of Ibadan in various capacities – Assistant Hall Warden and Acting Hall Warden in Tedder Hall; AG. Director, Zoological Garden; Twice Sub-dean (Postgraduate) for the Faculty of Science, Twice Head, Department of Zoology; Hall Master, Obafemi Awolowo Hall; and Dean, Faculty of Science, amongst others.
Professor Hassan is a scholar and has to his credit, seven co-authored books and 11 Technical Reports. 54 of his science research works have been on entomology, biological control as part of integrated pest management, biodiversity and the environment. He has developed linkages with a number of external bodies. His research works have produced ten PhD degree awardees, two of whom are non-Nigerians. Four of the PhD students are now professors. Six other PhD students are currently working on his current research interest.
He was Chairman, Central Working Committee (CWC) of New Covenant Church, Nigeria (1999-2009); and a member of the Working Committee in Nigeria of ‘Liberty International’, a registered charity organisation in the United Kingdom, from 2000 through 2009 and 2011 to the present.
He was twice appointed as a member of the Board of Governors of his Alma Mater in Efon-Alaye and Zinnia College, Lagos. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of two missionary primary schools in Oyo State. At present, he is developing an A-level campus school in Ibadan, with a view to giving back to society. He has also ventured into industry and is currently an Environment Consultant to a number of companies and the Federal Ministry of Environment.
Prof. Hassan has a passion for counselling students and staff on ethics and mentoring. He is engaged in public service and charities. He is now a naturophy doctor (a school of healing employing natural forces such as air, water, light, heat, dietetics, massage, etc., for curative purposes).
He holds the chieftaincy title of the Asiwalu Esugbon of Ijebu Imusin. He is a Christian and has been on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. He is happily married with children.
