Professor Abiodun Ogundaini was born to the family of Otunba Isaac Olugbuyi Ogundaini and Mrs. Selinah Tinuade Ogundaini of Odoaseri, Ijebu Imusin. He attended St. Mary’s Anglican Primary School, Ijebu Imusin, from 1961 to 1966, and Ijebu-Ode Grammar School from 1967 to 1972. Thereafter, he proceeded to read Pharmacy at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and graduated with a degree before joining the service of the university in October 1976, where he works to date. He obtained a M.Phil. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 1980 from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and a Ph.D from the University of Bath, U.K. in 1983, rising to the rank of a Professor in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 1997.
His academic interests are in Natural Product Research, NMR Spectroscopy, and Synthetic Chemistry. He has published extensively on validation of the ethno-medicinal uses of some locally used plants, especially those used in infections, and has been awarded a number of Fellowships to further his academic career.
He has served the university in several capacities – Head, Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry; Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy (for four years); Director, Central Science Laboratory of the University (for two years); and Member, Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (for two years).
Prof. A. O. Ogundaini is a member of the Institute of Public Analysts of Nigeria, a Chartered Member, Royal Society of Chemistry; and Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria. At present, he is the President of Young Men Christian Association (YMCA) of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Ijebu Imusin. He is married to Mrs. Dorothy Oghuegbuan Ogundaini and they are blessed with three children.
