Professor Tunde Otulana is a clinical professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine, University of California (UC), Davis, USA; and Vice President, Clinical Development and Medical Affairs for Respiratory at Boehringer Ingelhim Phwrmatical Inc.
Born and raised in Ijebu Imusin in Ogun State, Nigeria, Tunde received his primary education at St. Mary’s Anglican Primary School from 1963 to 1968 and went on to attend St. Anthony’s Grammar School, Esure, Ijebu Imusin from 1970 to 1974. He was the student in the celebrated news/story of the village boy ‘who was too good to pass WASC’. He scored A1 in 9 subjects (twice) and WAEC felt that such a feat could not have been achieved in a village, hence, it cancelled the first year results. Tunde repeated the same feat of scoring ‘A1’ in six subjects in the London GCE the following year and proved that he was truly a brilliant young chap.
He completed his university education at the University of Ibadan and graduated as a medical doctor in 1981. Following his residency in internal medicine at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, he travelled to England where he completed fellowship training in respiratory medicine at the Papworth and Addengrookes Hospitals, University of Cambridge, England. Subsequently, he completed a second pulmonary fellowship at Howard University Hospital, Washington, DC, USA.
In addition to his academic and clinical appointments, Dr. Otulana reviewed and conducted clinical research at the United States Food and Drug Administration and at a number of biotechnology companies helping to develop various medications for respiratory diseases. At the UC Davis College Medicine, he rose from an Assistant Clinical Professor and Associate Clinical Professor to a full Clinical Professor in June 2010.
Dr. Tunde has maintained several professional affiliations and editorial positions in scientific journals. He has published extensively, including an impressive number of peer-reviewed journal articles, abstracts, and books. He and his wife, Ranti, are blessed with two daughters, Sope and Tobi.
