Alhaji Abdul Ganiyu Adebayo Muili was born on January 8, 1941, at Esure, Ijebu Imusin into the Muslim family of Alhaji Muili Agbolakale Sunmola Babaegbea and Alhaja (Chief) Salamotu Ebisola Muili. He is a Prince as his father belongs to the Anihuniga dynasty of Esure, while his mother belongs to the Akija dynasty of Ikija, Ijebu. He had his primary education at Moslem Primary School, Ijebu Imusin from 1946 to December 1954. In January 1955, he enrolled at Ijebu Muslim College, Ijebu Ode. During his academic career in the school, he was appointed School Library Prefect in 1959. He sat for and passed his West African School Certificate in 1959 with a distinction (A) in Additional Mathematics (now Further Maths) among other subjects, coming out with Division One overall. He proceeded thereafter to the University College, Ibadan (now the University of Ibadan) in September 1960 to study for a degree in Mathematics. In the course of his study, he was awarded the Western Region Scholarship to complete his course at the University. He graduated with a B.Sc. Special Hons. London Degree in Mathematics in June 1964.
Upon graduation, he joined the Western Region Ministry of Lands & Housing, Survey Department in 1964. He then attended a pre-postgraduate course in surveying at the Survey School, Oyo. He proceeded to do his Postgraduate Diploma course at the University College London in 1966 under the United Kingdom Technical Programmes, with other international students: 2 Nigerians, 2 Pakistanis, and 2 Britons. Alhaji Ganiyu Muili was the only successful candidate at the end of the course in 1967. He passed the Nigerian Surveyors Licensed Examination in November 1969 and was awarded Surveyors’ Licence in 1970, becoming the First Licensed Surveyor of Ijebu Imusin extraction.
He served as Supervisor of the Ode Irele for Nigerian Joint Agencies (UAC). He also worked with the Lagos State Government Survey Department of the Ministry of Works and Housing in June 1973. He retired voluntarily in November 1975 having worked as the next in command to the State Surveyor General. He was a Member, of the Surveyors Disciplinary Committee of Kaduna State in 1979 and a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Surveyors (FNIS) in 1993.
Soon after retirement, he set up the firm of Messrs G. Adebayo Muili & Partners (Licensed Surveyors & Map Makers). His firm undertook the demarcation survey of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. He served on the Electrification Committee of Ijebu Imusin, with responsibility for the electrification of the community of Ijebu Imusin. Through his influence, the electrification project of the Ijagbure Community was completed earlier than the government’s schedule. He also contributed financially and professionally to the surveying of the lands of the present Ijebu Imusin Comprehensive High School and the Ijebu Imusin Community Complex Centre.
Alhaji Muili is a member and past President of the well-known I-JAY-1969 Club, a social club founded in 1969 for the development of the social and economic well-being of Ijebu Imusin’s sons and daughters nationwide. He is also a member and past President of the Ilupeju Lions Club as well as the past Regional Chairman of Lions Club International District 404. In 1983, he was the first Vice President of the Ijebu Imusin College Old Students Association (IMCOSA). He is a Patron of Ijebu Imusin Club 58 and Treasurer of the Sultan Bello Hall Chapter of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association. He has been decorated with the prestigious Ijebu Imusin Community Merit Award.
He is a devout Muslim who went on a pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina in 1979. He collaborated with his Muslim brothers to establish a branch of the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria in Ijebu Imusin. He served in the resolution of boundary disputes between communities, such as the Owo vs. Ekamarun, Eton Alaye vs. Ido Ajinore and several others.
He is a sports lover. He plays table tennis and badminton and won honours for the University College, Ibadan, and the New Brunswick International Hall of the University of London at different times in Table Tennis tournaments. He also donated a trophy and sponsored badminton competitions at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State.
Alhaji G. A. Muili is married to Alhaja Khadifat Amori Muili (of blessed memory) and Alhaja Medinat Wonuola Muili. He is blessed with children who are qualified professionals in the fields of Engineering, Architecture, Estate Management, and Pharmacy.
